Performing Pierogi: Making and Sharing Food in an Ethnic Community

Anna Kirchmann, Eastern Connecticut State University

Pierogi are an important and useful symbol of Polish American traditional ethnic foodways. Performed within families, kin and friends groups, and ethnic organizations, pierogi making ritual serves to transmit and reinforce ethnic identity. Performed with a goal of representation to the outside, pierogi making and sharing ritual defines and transcends ethnic boundaries.
