Mapping the Roots of New York City

Nitin Gadia, New Amsterdam History Center

Mapping Early New York is a project that has focused on mapping and documenting the people and places of New York City at its roots, when it was founded by the Dutch in the 1600s. With our web map you can go to a time and animate features, and click them to display information. So far we have drawn the first properties and who owned them, and demonstrated how to divide lots and who lived there. Our database has hundreds of people and documents that are being parsed. The project is under the New Amsterdam History Center (NAHC) and funded by the Daughters of Holland Dames, and maps the Dutch period from 1626-1680.
