Our intention, one way or another, is to hold an SSHA conference in November 2021. At this point in time (and recognizing that circumstances may change over time), we believe that a full in-person conference is unlikely, but that it may be possible to hold a hybrid conference supporting both in-person participation and virtual participation in the same event. Depending on certain COVID-related factors (pace and effectiveness of vaccine rollout, university budgets, travel restrictions, etc.), it may be necessary to pivot to an all-virtual conference later this year. Accordingly, we are going to remain as flexible as possible in the months ahead, but we stress that SSHA 2021 will take place!

During the submission process, we ask each individual to indicate at this point in time, a preference for virtual or in-person participation. (You will not be bound by this choice; we plan on asking participants to confirm their method of participation in late summer.) We will use these early numbers to guide our initial conference organizing effort. Importantly, we do believe we will be able to support at least some number of hybrid sessions—with some participants in person and some joining remotely.

We thank you for your interest and support of SSHA’s vibrant intellectual community. 2021 is shaping up to be an interesting year in which to organize a conference, and we are encouraged to hear that other academic associations of similar size have held successful conferences in recent months. We are committed to achieving an optimal experience, but we also ask for your flexibility going forward!
